Videos: late summer life at the community pool
There is still not a lot happening at the moment so I am thankful even for little scenes.
I love Nasturtium and this year, it grows like crazy all over the yard (but also in a fenced-off section in my veggie garden). I often gather some for salads or just to eat plain. It has a peppery flavor. I am surprised to see that the groundhog likes it too, but it also looks like it has to take a big sip right after 😜 Once again, I know they are destructive but they just crack me up.

Robins are some of the best bathers around, and I thought it was so funny how these two made way for the young Flicker. I never see Flickers at my feeders so I always love it when they pop up at the bath.

After ten days, the Northern Flicker came back tonight and is now sleeping in the nestbox :D The photo I snapped when he first came to check it out.

This morning, a Northern Flicker came to the bird bath. I think they are one of the most beautiful birds around here but they never come to my feeders - they prefer drilling the lawn for ants. So I was delighted to watch him. With his short woodpecker legs, he seemed to have some issues with the pebbles, but he still made it work. I hope he comes back. (The male can be distinguished from the female by his “mustache”. The female doesn’t have that.)

First he does a drum, then he takes a sip. This Northern Flicker is loving our gutters lately. He uses them to make noise to get the attention of the Flicker ladies in the neighborhood. We have updated the woodpecker nest box to fit the likes of him. Maybe we will get lucky this year.
Love is in the air...
A Northern Flicker has discovered that our gutter has a nice resonating quality and has drummed to impress the ladies quite a bit. Which prompted us to build an experimental starling-proof Flicker nest box. I am excited to see how that goes. Well, and the Blue Jays are also getting cozy :)
