When I first heard
the call of this woodpecker, I was confused as to what this bird was. The Redbellied Woodpeckers in my backyard are particularly vocal, and it is especially fun to listen to them when they have young ones to feed. Here is the resident female Red-bellied Woodpecker. For those who wonder about the name - the species has a red area on the lower belly. They are one of my favorites, and always willing to come to food bowls, even if just for a single sunflower seed.
Happy Feed the Birds Day!
Apparently, since 2016, February 3rd is the designated Feed The Birds Day. Here to wish everybody a great one is Hazel, the Red-bellied Woodpecker.
Pretties
on another murky day. The Redbellied woodpecker situation is interesting this winter too. I seem to only have females around. The male has not shown up in a long time. The Blue Jays seem to know the sound of my back door by now, they swoop down immediately as soon as I leave from a refill. I hope the sun will come out at some point this coming week. Here's to Monday, may only good things happen!
Of course,
there was also a bit of bickering. The Starling flock is still hanging around, and if there are mealworms in the seed mix, they go bananas and can become very aggressive. The Redbellied Woodpecker lady made sure they knew she did not want to share.
Hazel the resident
Red-bellied Woodpecker lady is enjoying a morsel as much as I hope you are enjoying your Friday night and weekend.
